Lunch Plate: La Fonda Latina

La Fonda

One of the often overlooked parts of Southern culture is the food and flavors of Latin cuisine in the Southeast, US.  From the Caribbean traditions on the Carolina Coast,  and South Florida, to the Tamale trail through the Mississippi delta and the Spanish fusion in New Orleans style cuisine; the amazing abundance of Latin influenced food is a major contributor to Southern culinary traditions.  La Fonda Latina is a great place to get a quick taste of several Latin treats, on a dime, and a great opportunity to sample the different flavors of Latin culture.

I love a great sandwich for lunch.  It’s quick, filling, affordable and when executed, a sandwich can bring an amazing blend of flavor and texture to a meal.  At La Fonda I would  recommend trying the “Bocaddillos Cubanos“, the Cuban sandwiches.  The Cuban sandwich, is a common lunch made by sugar workers and cigar rollers in Cuba, to provide a quick filling meal.  The standard Cuban consists of a large pressed Cuban loaf,  containing ham, swiss cheese, mustard, and a pickle.  I enjoy La Fonda’s Bocadillo Latino, their classic Cuban sandwich.  The Bocadillo Latino is a massive pile of ham, all the standard Cuban fixins, including the pressed pickle, and a sweet tart special sauce.  This sandwich is mild on flavor, but a monster in size, served with a side of beans and rice, which are customary amongst Caribbean dishes.  This thing is a filling meal, just like a Cuban sandwich is supposed to be.  Chances are you will still have  half a sandwich, with rice and beans, to enjoy at home for dinner.

For $8.25 you’re almost guaranteed to get 2 meals out of a single sandwich, or bring a friend and split one.  I call this a bargain, and definitely encourage anyone looking to quench their large appetite to check out La Fonda.  If you’re like me, you’ll be half full with chips and salsa before your meal even arrives. La Fonda has multiple locations throughout the Atlanta area so,  definitely stop in and give the Cuban sandwich a shot.   Stay Hungry Y’all !
