Tuesday Wine: Spanish Reds for the Last Days of Summer

Even though Summer’s coming to a close, there’s plenty of time left to fire up the grill.  We’re reviewed two Spanish reds this week to try and find a good accompaniments to an end-of-summer feast “a la parrilla”.  The first is a Red Crianza from El Coto in the Rioja region of Spain followed by a red table wine from Protocolo.

Food has always been big part of my life. It is one of my greatest obsessions and a topic  discussed multiple times a day in my and my families household. A good example of this was when my mom secured our summer cottage in Cape Cod back in March, the first thing I said was, “When should we start making up the menu for the week?”

Southern Kitchen – Georgia Peach Honey Preserves

As we’ve noted before, ’tis the season for the farmer’s market.  It just feels right to get up Saturday morning and go buy fresh fruits and veggies from real people.  Problem is, sometimes I get carried away and buy a bit too much.  The tomatoes/peaches/cucumbers/etc are just too good to pass up when in season, and there’s only twenty one meals in a week.  The question naturally presents itself…..What am I gonna do with the twenty {insert produce here} I just came home with?   Answer- Invite a bunch of Hungry Southerner’s over to your house for a party…….or…..do a bit of canning, pickling, and preserving.

Southern Cheese Week

Our number one goal at The Hungry Southerner is to spread the word about the wonderful people, food and culture here in the South and it starts with our local farmers and purveyors.  We are strong believers in supporting our local Southern economy  and starts with shopping local first, and supporting your neighborhood stores and producers.  In our first podcast we met with Tim Gaddis, of Star Provisions, and talked a little bit about Southern cheese and the cheese industry.  In our never ending quest to help Southerners reconnect with their local producers and store owners, we love working with those purveyors and producers to help spread the word about local events.  One of those events is Cheese Week at Star Provisions in Atlanta,GA from Sept. 14 through Sept. 18.  It’s going to be a great opportunity for you to come connect with some amazing dairy farmers and cheese producers from the South and show your support for your local Southern producers.  Each day will feature a different artisan cheese producer including samples for everyone to try.  You’ll have the opportunity to really learn and ask questions about their farms and processes, and hear the stories about how they became artisan cheese makers.  As a bonus our good friend Angie Tillman will be there talking about Phickles Pickles, giving y’all a great chance to sample some of their amazing pickled okra (Tell her The Hungry Southerner sent you).  This will be a wonderful opportunity to sample some of the finest cheeses the South has to offer, and the wonderful people behind it’s production.  If you live near Atlanta please pick a day and come support one of these fine local artisan cheese makers, and be sure to look for us while your there! Yankee Challenge: Chicken & Dumplings

I have been searching through my grandmother’s recipes,  look for some family heirlooms.  It just so happens our friend Ashley over at  Ice Milk Aprons has us looking for something special (Project: Preserve The Blog).  During my search, not only did I discovered my Great Grandfather’s Cafe Chicken & Dumpling recipe but also this month’s Yankee Challenge. It’s time to pass down a soulful family Southern dish to our favorite Yankee cook.
