Tuesday Wine: Beat the Heat with Cool Whites

I’m not sure how your summer’s been, but the staff of The Hungry Southerner has been roasting!  After several days of temperatures in the 90’s, a cool white wine is a great way to beat the heat on a warm summer night.  We’ve got two great options that are light, crisp and refreshing.  The first is a Sauvignon Blanc from Cupcake Vineyards, recommended by one of our readers back in May.  Thanks Kevin!  The second is a Trinty Oaks Pinot Grigio.  Give them both a try and let us know your favorite.

Southern Kitchen – Buttermilk Pound Cake vs The Original

As a stress cooker, I did my fair share of baking in college.  Most of my friends knew that an all night study session would inevitably be followed by an afternoon of baking stuff I couldn’t possibly eat, so they’d drop by after class got out to enjoy the spoils.  Most of the time I’d make some cookies, but after a really bad test, I needed cake.  Pound Cake, that is.  So easy, and so good.  Southern food made simple.

Southern Red Velvet Cake Challenge

Ahh…. Red Velvet Cake. What a fantastic challenge! The first time I ever tasted Red Velvet Cake was six years ago at Regas Restaurant in Knoxville, Tennessee. I was reluctant to try a nibble after I was told the cake was made with cocoa and the frosting made with cream cheese. Cocoa and cream cheese = icky. However, after my mother-in-law convinced me to take a bite of her piece, I ordered a ginormous piece of my own. It was SO stinkin’ good!
