Local, Fresh, Sustainable – Local Three : Prep Time

We are wrapping up our series with the guys from Local Three.  We’ve been following (video 1, video 2) these guys through the process of opening their local Atlanta restaurant, and the day is finally upon us.  Chef Chris Hall gave us a final sneak peak of the menu, before the official December opening of Local Three.  This time Chris let us show you what’s behind the food at Local Three and how it’s cooked using fresh ingredients while keeping it simple and delicious.  This video will have your mouth watering when you see all that pork jowl, squash and kale. Stay tuned because we’ll have 2 more videos coming to close out our Local Three series you won’t want to miss. Stay Hungry Y’all !

Local, Fresh, Sustainable – 5 Seasons Brewing

We continue our quest for local Southerners that are doing things Local, Fresh, and Sustainable and have stumbled upon a marriage of food and brew.  Meet Crawford Moran, the Brewmaster at 5 Seasons Brewing, and a Southerner with a passion for bringing seasonality and sustainability to the micro-brewing industry. We sat down and talked about what makes 5 Seasons so unique including its symbiotic relationship to the farmers with its constantly changing menus, and the constantly rotating styles of beers that will keep your palates busy for years to come.  Throw out all your old notions of what a brew pub is.  The dynamic team of Crawford Moran’s brewing and the fresh, local, seasonal cooking provided by Chef David Larkworthy combine to pay great respect to the wonderful ingredients they are both working with.  A wonderful local Southern discovery that can’t be missed.  Stay Hungry Y’all!

Southern Kitchen – Georgia Peach Honey Preserves

breakfast

As we’ve noted before, ’tis the season for the farmer’s market.  It just feels right to get up Saturday morning and go buy fresh fruits and veggies from real people.  Problem is, sometimes I get carried away and buy a bit too much.  The tomatoes/peaches/cucumbers/etc are just too good to pass up when in season, and there’s only twenty one meals in a week.  The question naturally presents itself…..What am I gonna do with the twenty {insert produce here} I just came home with?   Answer- Invite a bunch of Hungry Southerner’s over to your house for a party…….or…..do a bit of canning, pickling, and preserving.

Local, Fresh, Sustainable – Chef Chris Hall

In an effort to bring Southerners back in touch with their food and local producers, The Hungry Southerner is doing a series of interviews with Southern farmers, producers, businesses and chefs discussing what they are doing that is unique to be sustainable, fresh and most important, a respected presence in their local economy.  Our goal is to document and share with you some really great stories of Southerners with a passion for what they do.  You’ll see everything from a family run pickling business to hand made aprons, sustainable restaurants and even some local dairy farmers.  We want our readers to share in our passion for supporting local economy and ensuring that the crafts of these businesses are being honored and passed on to the next generation.

How a Georgia Boy Learned to Cook (Award Winning) Beef Barbecue

brisket

Having been born and raised in Georgia, it has always been my not-so-humble opinion that, when it comes to barbecue, pork is the one true meat.  Anything else is heresy.  Many times have I heard my Texan friends wax rhapsodic about the joys of beef barbecue, and many times have I lumped their reveries in with all of the other cultish sounding utterances about their home state that seem to stream endlessly from their mouths. I once had to eject a tried-and-true member of the Black Cowboys of Texas from a New Year’s Eve party at my house because he got drunk and wouldn’t shut up about how great things were back in Texas.  But I digress…

Review: Ormsby’s – Atlanta,GA

Ormsby's

Ormsby’s is, without a doubt, our new favorite place to  spend a lazy Saturday afternoon in Atlanta.  The folks that brought us Atkins Park, have created a unique restaurant / social club that is an homage to the underground speakeasies that popped up during prohibition.  This is a great place to grab a quick bite for lunch or sit and stay awhile.  Ormsby’s provides lots of extracurricular activities, with several underground Boce ball courts, darts and shuffle board; there’s plenty to do to keep you distracted.  So how’s the food?
